JareMaga July 10

Did you understand what happened to the author's wife? Have you ever had or heard about a similar experience?

じゃれマガ 2012年07月10日号
My wife was going somewhere on her motor scooter. Suddenly, a bee hit went inside her helmet. It stung her just above her right ear. She was planning to go shopping, but the sting hurt so much that she had to come home. The pain went away after 30 minutes, but it still hurt when she touched it. Now she understands how painful a bee sting can be. She remembers our poor younger daughter who was stung several times by bees when she was small.

JareMaga July 6 - Divorce Ceremony

I've never heard of this before, and was really surprised!

One reader wrote:
I watched a unique ceremony on TV the other day. People have wedding ceremonies, but how many people have a divorce ceremony?
The couple getting a divorce invited their friends and had a party. The master of ceremonies ("shikaisha") introduced their personal histories. Some of their friends said a few words. It was exactly the same as a wedding ceremony, but there was one big difference. They broke their wedding rings with a hammer.
If you were invited, would you go?

Today is Independence Day in the U.S. People go to watch big fireworks displays, and they play with fireworks. Unlike in Japan, however, fireworks are very difficult to buy. In fact, they are only sold in summer at some stores. I checked one store, and their web site said that they would be open from June 29 to July 8. Why is it so difficult to find fireworks? Because many Americans think that they are very dangerous. Parents don't want their children to play with fireworks.

Mito Komon

I haven't watched this TV drama for a long time, but somehow I feel a bit sad to hear it'll come to an end. I used to watch it with my family when I was a little child. A long-running show like this reminds you of your childhood.

じゃれマガ 2011年11月16日号
I was sad to hear that they will stop the TV samurai drama "Mitokomon" at the end of this year. I used to watch it every Monday night when I first came to Japan. At that time, I didn't understand much Japanese, but I could understand the story. In each episode, Mito Komon and his group would find powerful people who were doing something bad. He would tell them to stop, but they would start fighting. Mito Komon always won at the end.

International flights

Yes, things have changed since 911...

じゃれマガ 2011年09月20日号
Traveling to and from the U.S. has become difficult since 9/11.
There are many checkpoints at the airports.
You can't take any liquid on the plane in your hand luggage.
One of my students bought a snowglobe.
It is a glass ball full of liquid.
When you shake it, it looks like it's snowing.
She put the snowglobe in her hand luggage, but they wouldn't let her
take it on the plane.
She had to leave it at the airport.
Poor girl!

Hottest Summer (JareMaga)

じゃれマガ 2011年08月15日号

This is one of the hottest summers we've had in Japan. Why does it feel so hot?

One reason is that people are trying to save energy. There is less air
conditioning in buildings.

If you go outside, you should use some of the new products in stores.
You can buy cooling scarves and towels that you wear around your neck.
There is also cooling gell that you apply to your neck.

You also need salt. You can buy salt candy or eat "umeboshi."

News - Nadeshiko Japan beats Sweden

じゃれマガ 2011年07月14日号

They did it again!
Nadeshiko Japan beat Sweden 3-1.
They came from behind after Sweden got the first goal.
Then, they took over the game.
All of their goals were great, but I was really impressed by the last goal.
Kawasumi kicked the ball 35 meters over the Swedish goalee and into the goal.
Yesterday, the U.S.A. beat France 3-1, so Nadeshiko Japan will be playing them next Sunday.
How do I feel?
I want both teams to win.

Strange food?

じゃれマガ 2011年07月08日号

A reader wrote:
When I was 16, I took a trip to Izu-Oshima in summer with the members of my Rugby team.
We stayed at a small country inn.
When we went to eat breakfast in the dining room, we were surprised to see barnacles, small shellfish and hermit crabs in our miso soup.
We were all kids, so none of us ate the strange food.
We thought the host of that inn was rough and impolite.
Now I realize that he was just serving us the local food.

Rewards or Punishment

Q: Which do you prefer, the Japanese way or the Californian way? Why?

------------------------------------------------
じゃれマガ 2011年07月07日号

The government wants people to save energy.
Should they use rewards or punishment ("ame ka muchi")?
For large users of energy in the Kanto and Tohoku areas, they are using punishment.
These users have to cut their energy use by 15%.
If they don't, they have to pay fines of up to 1,000,000 yen.
In California, the government is using rewards.
If companies cut their electricity use by 20%, they pay less for the electricity.

Be careful not to get heat stroke

じゃれマガ 2011年07月06日号

Everyone is worried about energy now.
People are trying not to use too much electricity.
At my university, they want us to keep the air conditioners at 28 degrees.
At home, I use an electric fan instead of air conditioning.
It's important to save energy, but be careful not to get heat stroke ("necchusho").
People over 65 should be especially careful.
Last year 1,718 people died from heat stroke in Japan, and about 80% of them were over 65.

Interesting things around us

I found this article interesting! Do you know any similar stories? Or have you ever seen any interesting or funny signs?
Last night, I was standing in front of a drink vending machine and talking to someone. I noticed that they were selling 7 Up, a lemon-lime soft drink.
I wasn't thirsty, but I almost bought a can. 7 Up used to be very popular, but I never see it in stores these days.
Then the man I was talking to pointed to a sign on the vending machine. It said, "In case of a natural disaster, the drinks in this machine will be free."  That's very kind.

Hotter Summer?

Below is today's Jaremaga. Yes, the rainy season has already started this year. It marked the second earliest start on record in Kanto (Yomiuri Online). I do hope summer is just as hot and long as usual, or a bit milder than last year.

I moved from Osaka last year expecting summer to be milder here in Chiba than in Osaka, but it was much hotter than expected. However, I remember I could still live without much airconditioning. Maybe it won't be very hard for me to try not to use my air conditioner.

The weather is strange these days. The typhoon season used to start in summer, but we had our first typhoon in May this year. Then the rainy season started a few weeks earlier than usual. I am beginning to get worried about summer. If it is longer and hotter than usual, people will keep their air conditioners on and use a lot of electricity. If you get very hot this summer, try not to use your air conditioner. Take a cold bath instead. (じゃれマガ 2011年06月07日号)
