自動詞/他動詞、非対格動詞/非能格動詞

対格型言語(日本語・英語など)と能格型言語(*活格型や中立型もある)

他動詞の主語を【A】、自動詞の主語を【S】、他動詞の目的語を【O】とすると、
対格言語では、【A】と【S】が同じ格標識、【O】がそれとは別の格標識を与えられる。
(A) 子供(O) 追いかけた。  
子供(S) 逃げた。

能格型言語では、【S】と【O】が同じ格標識、【A】がそれとは別の格標識を与えられる。
Dyrbal語の例 (Dixon, R.W.M. 1994. Ergativity. CUP.)
ŋuma banaga-nyu
父-絶対 戻る 「父が戻る」
ŋuma yabu- ŋgu bura-n
父-絶対 母-能 見る  「母が父を見る」

「能格」という概念を援用して、自動詞が「非能格」動詞と「非対格」動詞に下位分類される。
(ネイミングというか、「非」がいまひとつしっくり来ないのでいつもごっちゃになる)
・非能格動詞(主語のコントロールがきく事象を表す自動詞)
・非対格動詞(主語のコントロールがきかない事象を表す自動詞)

英語では、過去分詞形で形容詞的に使えるものは非対格動詞のみである、といった具合に、この区別は文法現象の記述に役に立つ。
・◎ fallen leaves (落ち葉)... fall は非対格動詞
・× a walked boy (???) ... walk は非能格動詞

非対格動詞の例:Perlmutter (1978:162-163)の分類
a. D 構造における目的語が意味的に被動者(Patient) を表す:burn, darken, die, drop, fall, float, freeze, melt, scatter, sink, etc.
b. 存在や出来事を表す:arise, disappear, ensure, exist, happen, occur, result, show up, take place, turn up, vanish, etc.
c. 光、騒音、臭いなど、非意図的な放出を表す:clang, crackle, glitter, glow, pop, shine, smell, snap, sparkle, stink, etc.
d. 始まり、終わり、継続など、相(アスペクト(aspect))を表す:begin, cease, continue, end, start, stop, etc.
e. 継続状態を表す:last, remain, stay, survive, etc.

※ 非対格動詞は能格動詞と呼ばれることもあるが、この両者が区別される場合、「能格動詞」は自動詞・他動詞の用法を併せ持つような動詞((1)(2)のroll, fill)を指す(または、そのような動詞が自動詞として用いられている場合にのみ(1b, 2b)能格動詞と呼ばれる)。
(1) a. We rolled the ball down the hill. b. The ball rolled down the hill.
(2) a. He filled the bath with water.  b. The bath filled with water.
