日本の漫画業界はアメリカやフランスよりも大規模。1990年代には毎年の漫画の売上は6000億円近くあり、日本で発行された雑誌や漫画などの書籍の総売上の4分の1を占めた。
1947年当時19歳だった手塚治は『新宝島』を発表し、400,000部を売り上げベストセラーになった。戦後10年間、彼に加え多くの漫画家が現れ漫画ブームが起こった。
手塚治と表現技術
ヨーロッパの読者は日本の漫画を読むことは映画を見ることに似ていると言っている。『新宝島』の中で主人公が船に乗るためあわてて車で波止場に着く場面がある。そのシーンに全部で180ページあるうちの8ページを費やしている。前の漫画は1コマか2コマだけだった。
